The Tale of Vaikasi Vishakam: The Birth of Lord Murugan

Vaikasi Vishakam is an important festival in Hinduism, especially for devotees of Lord Muruga (also known as Subramanya or Kartikeya). This day is believed to be the birthday of Lord Muruga, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

The Divine Birth of Lord Muruga

The tale of Vaikasi Vishakam begins with a great concern among the devas (celestial beings). A powerful demon named Surapadman was troubling the world and had become impossible to defeat. The gods prayed to Lord Shiva to create a divine warrior who could defeat the demon and bring back peace.

Lord Shiva opened his third eye, and from it, six sparks of fire came out. These sparks were so powerful that even the fire god Agni and the wind god Vayu could not bear them. So, they carried the sparks to River Saravana Poigai, a divine lake.

In the lake, the sparks turned into six beautiful babies, each resting on a lotus. These six babies were taken care of by the six Krittika (divine mothers). Later, Goddess Parvati lovingly embraced the six babies together and made them into one child with six faces – Lord Muruga, also known as Shanmukha, meaning “one with six faces”.

Purpose of His Birth

Lord Muruga was born to destroy evil and protect dharma (righteousness). He grew up to become a brave and intelligent warrior. The gods made him the commander-in-chief of their army. One of his most important victories was against Surapadman. Lord Muruga fought a fierce battle and defeated the demon, restoring peace and balance in the universe. This divine victory is remembered with devotion and joy during Vaikasi Vishakam.

How Vaikasi Vishakam is Celebrated

On this special day, temples dedicated to Lord Muruga are beautifully decorated. Devotees take part in,

• Processions with Lord Muruga’s idol
• Carrying ‘Kavadi’ as an offering of devotion
