Degrees of Reiki

The Reiki system was separated into three levels or degrees by Usui Sensei. Each degree has a structure throughout the early learning phase and then permits the learner to grow within it afterwards. Regardless of their spiritual or theological convictions, everyone can learn Reiki.

First Level of Reiki (Shoden)

The first degree of Reiki is a soft introduction to the Reiki energy, but it can change your life. At this first level, Usui taught his students how to heal themselves, and Reiki One is based largely on what he had in mind. A Reiki Master gives students four “attunements” in order to align them with the Reiki energy and give them the ability to channel it for themselves, their loved ones, and others. Students are introduced to the Precepts and urged to live by them during this initial phase of learning.

At this level, the concept of the body’s energy centres, or chakras, and the role they play in the healing process are introduced. As this part of the education is crucial for the student’s continuous development, the practise of mindfulness is also introduced at this point. The first degree is taught over the course of two days, and by the conclusion of it, the student will be comfortable using Reiki on both herself and others. As each student starts to repair their own lives on many different levels, Reiki One marks the beginning of many beneficial improvements for them. Those who may want to advance can do so by learning the subsequent level of Reiki, ideally with at least three months’ notice.
