Shirdi Sai Baba’s Nine Coins & Nine Types of Devotion

Shirdi Sai Baba is one of the most beloved saints in India, known for his teachings of love, faith, patience, and selfless service. He lived in Shirdi, a small town in Maharashtra, and continues to inspire millions of people with his simple but powerful messages. One of the most touching stories from his life is about the nine coins he gave to a woman named Lakshmi Bai, which symbolized the nine types of devotion (Navavidha Bhakti).

The Story of the Nine Coins

Lakshmi Bai was a humble devotee of Sai Baba who served him with love and sincerity for many years. She would cook food for Baba and take care of his needs without expecting anything in return. On the day before he took Mahasamadhi (left his physical body), Baba gave her nine silver coins, one by one. These coins were not just a gift , they had a deeper meaning. They represented the nine types of devotion, as described in Hindu scriptures like the Bhagavata Purana.

1. Shravanam (Listening to God’s stories)

This means listening to stories, songs, and teachings about God or saints with full attention and love. By listening, our mind becomes pure, and we feel closer to the divine.

2. Kirtanam (Singing or speaking about God)

This is about singing bhajans, chanting names, or telling stories of God. Singing with devotion creates peace and joy in our hearts.

3. Smaranam (Remembering God always)

This type of devotion is about keeping God in your thoughts at all times, whether you’re working, walking, or resting.

4. Paada Sevanam (Serving God’s feet or his devotees)

This devotion means serving God or saints with love. Since God is not always in human form, serving the poor, the needy, and the saints is also equal to serving God.

5. Archanam (Worshiping God with rituals)

This includes offering flowers, lighting lamps, or doing poojas (rituals) with sincerity and devotion.

6. Vandanam (Paying respect or bowing down)

This is the act of bowing before God with humility and love. It shows that we are surrendering our ego.

7. Daasyam (Being God’s servant)

This is the feeling of being a servant of God and doing every action as a service to Him.

8. Sakhyam (Being God’s friend)

This devotion is about having a friendly relationship with God, talking to Him like a friend, and sharing your joys and sorrows.

9. Atma Nivedanam (Complete surrender to God)

This is the highest form of devotion where you surrender your mind, body, and soul to God. You trust that whatever He does is for your good.

When Baba gave the nine coins to Lakshmi Bai, it was not just a reward for her service. He was showing the world that true devotion can take many forms, and that all paths of love and faith lead to God. Lakshmi Bai was an example of selfless service, and Baba recognized her pure heart.
