Jaljhilni Ekadashi – A Day of Divine Transformation

Jaljhilni Ekadashi, also known as Parivartini Ekadashi or Parsva Ekadashi, is one of the most sacred days in the Hindu calendar. Observed in the Shravan–Bhadrapada period (August–September), this Ekadashi holds deep spiritual meaning and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

On this day, it is believed that Lord Vishnu, who has been resting in yoga nidra (divine sleep) since Devshayani Ekadashi, changes his posture while resting on the serpent Sheshnaag in the cosmic ocean. Hence, it is called Parivartini (the day of turning) and Jaljhilni (connected with water).

The Spiritual Significance of Jaljhilni Ekadashi

  • This Ekadashi symbolizes transformation, renewal, and purification. Just as Lord Vishnu turns in his sleep, devotees are reminded to turn inward, reflect, and realign their life’s direction.
  • Observing this vrat is said to wash away sins, bring prosperity, and pave the path for liberation (moksha).
  • It is also believed that charity, fasting, and meditation performed on this day yield manifold results.

Rituals and Practices

  • Fasting & Puja: Devotees observe a strict fast, offering prayers and flowers to Lord Vishnu. Some follow a complete nirjala fast (without water), while others take fruits and milk.
  • Tulsi Worship: Tulsi leaves are considered very auspicious on this day. Offering Tulsi to Vishnu grants special blessings.
  • Jaljhilni Yatra: In many places, idols of Lord Vishnu are taken out in a water procession (Jaljhilni) and placed in rivers, ponds, or tanks, symbolizing purification and divine grace.
  • Chanting & Meditation: Reciting Vishnu Sahasranama and chanting mantras like Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya help invoke spiritual energy.

Benefits of Observing Jaljhilni Ekadashi

  • Removal of negative karmas and obstacles
  • Mental clarity, peace, and inner strength
  • Blessings of health, wealth, and prosperity
  • Spiritual upliftment and progress toward moksha

How to Celebrate at Home

If you cannot participate in a yatra or temple rituals, you can still honor this day spiritually:

  • Wake up early and take a sacred bath.

  • Offer water, Tulsi leaves, flowers, and fruits to Lord Vishnu.

  • Read or listen to the Ekadashi Vrat Katha.

  • Meditate or chant Vishnu mantras for at least 15 minutes.

  • Donate food or essentials to the needy as a form of seva.

Jaljhilni Ekadashi is a reminder of divine transformation — just as Lord Vishnu shifts his posture, we too can shift our inner energies toward light, truth, and devotion. Observing this sacred vrat with sincerity helps align our soul with divine consciousness.
